1:50 scaled inversion of mine shafts and specific seams when viewed in reflection.
The Ashington artworks include two sculptures two benches and a series of glass and resin inlaid designs in the pavement. The sculptures and their positioning apart are a 1:50 scale representation of mine shafts and seams at the Ashington and Woodhorn collieries. When viewed as a reflection in the black granite and cor-ten steel bases upon which they stand, they create the impression of looking down from the top of the mineshaft. A scaled human figure on the bases gives a sense of the sheer depth of the pits. Public seating is inspired by the miners bathtubs that hung on the back walls of every house.
