Run Riot

By Susan Williams 2015
Straws are planted in the ground in a fan like shape to resemble drawings or symbols of grass, marshes on maps. The straws read as plants, fans, hands waving, celebration, a wild party, dancing, animated, energized. There is also some suggestion of time, clock hands, time passing. In sunlight they appear florescent with the joint of the straw lighting up, reminiscent of bones, a skeleton hand. One visitor was reminded of a mendicants head dress. Curiously not all the straws appear to have shadows. The work was placed in the rougher part of the garden with the builders equipment in the background, their sudden appearance, reminiscent of the vigorous growth of weeds on building sites.
