This is part of my ongoing work The George Richmond Portrait Project, where I am tracing portraits by British Portraitist George Richmond (1809-1896) to private homes in order to photograph them and their current owners (descendants of those portrayed) in situ. I am also conducting audio interviews with them about what they know both of their ancestors and the portraits. George Richmond is my great great great grandfather and was a member of the William Blake led group 'The Ancients'. He portrayed hundreds of people including writers, politicians, members of the aristocracy, royalty, Quaker philanthropists, scientists, artists, critics and many private commissions. Famous sitters include Charlotte Bronte, William Wilberforce, Edward VIII, Elizabeth Fry, John Ruskin and Charles Darwin.
The George Richmond portraits belonging to Ruth and Joseph Lubbock are two small watercolours of their mutual ancestors John and Elizabeth Guerney.
