SECRET HISTORIES: ORFORD NESS - THE PAGODAS AT NIGHT acrylic on paper

By Phil Whiting 2026

I visited Orford Ness recently and from sketches made on site made this painting. The Cold War helped define a post-war generation of children including myself. The threat of nuclear annihilation was very real. Now we have a nasty paranoid psychopath in the Kremlin and to quote Mark Twain: “History does not repeat itself, but it damn sure rhymes!” I regard this work as a sub-strand of my overriding project ‘Places of Mourning in the Western World’.
