Sewing 1939

By  Amy Houghton 2010

Sewing 1939 is a a video animation of a found negative. The fabric and the needle in the photograph are animated using video. This piece is shown on a small screen embedded into a wall framed by a subtle photo mount.I use this photo to act as the ancestral origin of my textile craft beyond my life span in an attempt to authenticate my being a textile artist. This animation is one in a series of animated photographs. Through these works I am faced with the impossibility, and therefore, absurdity of trying to access the past through the nostalgic use of these indexical antiques, when what is longed for is the desire which the longing and the consequential activity of looking achieves.
