Site Built

Site Built explored the rapid gentrification of Mabgate, Leeds. It used kinetic sculpture to re-physicalise the location through its own material - parts from a deconstructed washing machine sourced in the area. Taking an improvisational approach to found material, sound-making devices were initially developed through performance workshops with students, then re-designed & built into the gallery architecture.

My interest in Mabgate peaked due to the closure of my previous studio space to redevelopment in 2019. The disused machine encapsulates the changing nature of this area; connecting the industrial history of Mabgate (which built up around the beck) with its contemporary residential and service landscape.
