Sixteen Fathoms (Trafalgar Shoes)

By  Rachel Johnston 2004 - 2005

Rachel Johnston

These pieces relate to earlier work in which the notion of journey-making and narrative were embodied in shoe-like forms that included maps and sea charts and were made from etched copper. This specific piece was made for an exhibition at Portsmouth City Museum as part of the bicentenary of the Battle of Trafalgar. At Northampton Museum I found examples of footwear typical of the era and used textures from the soles layered with sea charts and directions from the battle in 1805 to suggest something of the story
