Spine

By  Rich White 2014
Installation using timber and blackout cloth. Commissioned by Effervescent for I'm Beautiful Now, Plymouth. 24 October - 26 November 2014 Effervescent and Barnardo's worked for two months with nine girls aged 10-14 who have caring responsibilities for their parents or brothers and sisters. The girls devised an exhibition about what it feels like to be a young carer and selected works to reflect these feelings from an open call. 'My favourite piece of work in the show is this twister. Life is like a twister - things come slowly creeping up on you or they come very fast and suddenly; you never know what's going to happen. I want audiences to see the twister and know how young carers feel. I'd like people to feel the fear and the sense of the unknown. I feel that quite a bit.' Cheyanne, aged 14. Curated by Sophia McCracken, Jolene Ransley, Crystal Lynes, Sasha Richardson, Jade Eland, Chara Abdullah-Thomas, Faith Manchip, Cheyanne Parker, and Jessica Smith with Effervescent. Show includes: Mike Cobb, Hayley Harrison, Nicole Tilley and Ferran Vergés.
