This image shows the work when just completed in September 2000. Infinity consists of a series of standing stones in a continuous loop almost 200 metres in length which forms a figure-of -eight (the sign for infinity). The loop is elongated and is intended to resemble also the analemma (meaning sun-dial) which results from plotting the position of the sun at its zenith at monthly intervals over the course of a year. The project developed over three years and was supported by the community group responsible for the site, which formed to develop a reclaimed quarry into a woodland and an area of natural beauty. On the edge of the ancient lead-mining and quarrying town of Wirksworth in Derbyshire, it was officially opened to the public in May2001.
