Sycamore Shadow

By  Claire Barber 2023

Sycamore Shadow explores how black stitches can be set into the soft double-faced ochre/grey fabric that was once the practical workwear of a widow’s late husband. The stitches attempt to capture the flickering soft shadows from a sycamore tree, growing close to the deceased graveside, with the movement of loose end-threads a glimpse towards a view of shadows which are ever shifting, and impossible to pin down. The subtle ill-defined wavering shadows cast from a sycamore tree contrasts the accompanying work ‘Cactus Shadow’ that tether’s uniform black stitches into the twill of black linen fabric to create a still silhouette.
