Tales from a Viewmaster

By  Henny Burnett 2019

Martin Urmson

An ebay purchase of a Viewmaster came with two home made photographic reels; one of everyday family scenes of a visit to the beach from the 1960s and another reel which looks earlier of a group of men boarding a boat possibly on a works-outing. The maker didn't properly understand the concept of making these reels with the result that they gave a different image for each eye creating an overlay of images when you look through the Viewmasters. Contrasting images from the two reels are overlaid and are used as negatives for cyanotype photographic prints which create a new narrative from these unknown and found images. The outcome is a small installation piece that includes the book of cyanotypes, an accompanying book of photo prints plus the two viewmasters with the original reels.
