The Black Chamber is a painted box-like construction made from repurposed Welsh slate. Using oil, oil pastel and pigment, I developed a dark, enclosed form that sits between painting, object, altar and architectural fragment.
The work responds to the slate’s weight, fracture and previous use. Its interior suggests a cave, mine, chamber or protected space, while the painted surface introduces flashes of colour and light within the darkness. Rather than representing a specific place, it creates an encounter with concealment, pressure and passage.
The work forms part of my wider exploration of stone as a threshold material carrying geological time, labour, memory and transformation.
