This sculpture drew inspiration from an ancient ballad that consisted of verses referring to outlandish claims regarding the a scale and potency of a mythical creature ...'The Derby Ram', including the extent of its fleece, the size of its horns, its eyes and the even the amount of blood it issued upon its slaughter. A powerful, mischievous and proud creature but also enigmatic and capable of surprises.
(Stone: Derbyshire Millstone Grit)
"The Wool upon his back, Sir,
Reached up unto the sky,
The Eagles made their nests there, Sir,
For I heard the young ones cry!"......
"The space between his horns, Sir,
Was as far as a man could reach,
And there they built a pulpit
For the Parson there to preach!"
