The River Flowing under the Bank of England Dreams of Power

By Alke Schmidt 2021

Oil & acrylic on patterned cotton fabric. Painting showing the ruin of the dividends room of the old Bank of England under water, with wildlife taking over. I imagined that during to climate change the levels of the Thames and its tributary River Walbrook (which flows under the Bank of England) will rise and flood the Bank. The ruin is based on the John Soane-built predecessor of the current Bank,  referencing the ruin craze of Soane's time.
