The Script of the Stones, The Tongue of the Wave 2018

By  Kate Bell 2018
The title is taken from a Vernon Watkins’ poem, a Welsh poet who wrote about the Gower Coast. The painting explores portals into another world, through the hollow in a stone and cave to the intersection of waves and sand, land and sea, sea and sky. Sea water licking the surface of the rocks marking moulding and tracing, filling ravines and crevices creating surface tension, spurting upwards as the waves recede to at once strike again. The effect of sea and air continually imploding and exploding on the hard surface of the stone.
