The Spider's Palace

I had the use of a large space in Art Haven, an artist-led gallery in an historic warehouse on Exeter Quay. Rather than using it to show existing work, I decided to take advantage of the space to make work on a much larger scale than I can in my studio. As a development of ideas which featured in my work in recent years -- paintings that grow out of the flat surface, reach out from the wall and sometimes end up on the floor -- I wanted to make works that connected with each other and the space they were in: visually if not physically joined, animating the whole space. The work incorporated elements of drawing, painting and sculpture. The title "The Spider's Palace" is from a story by Richard Hughes about surreal space, transformation, curiosity and regret. The installation was about using space, as a spider does, with linking lines and surfaces defining spaces which might be shelters or traps.
