The Ties that Bind is a sculpture and sound installation that is a suspended continuous loop with no ending and no beginning. The shapes form mountain peaks with steep and gentle valleys. The catenaries of the curves almost touch the floor as do the hanging threads of some knots, almost but not quite except for one or two longer pieces. Each section of the rope is discrete, not touching another part of the installation except when the installation moves either through draughts or touch. The work is accompanied by Aeolian harps. These allude to Aeolus giving Odysseus a bag full of all the winds tied up with a thread to help him on his journey and to wind knots that were used by sailors to try and encourage the right strength of wind to fill their boats sails.
