The last year or so has been one of investigation, recovery and the ever fluctuating and shifting metamorphosis of care. My now 5yo and I have been diagnosed with the same hereditary immune disorder and we have become full-time carers and home ed teachers to each other. We have been finding our new rhythms together, learning and creating together and this year is devoted to each other and figuring out our needs.
This collaborative work Cyd and I have made together in our sickbed was exhibited at the Who'd 'Ave 'Em exhibition, curated by Kinfolk Families Collective at Stereo, Glasgow. The exhibition features artist parents and caregivers who work with and through and against their care responsibilities.
Cyd and I have been experimenting with thermal drawings on medical paper, co creating a water spell, a collage of goddesses and creatures and unfinished ideas.. of which there are always many when you're a sick artist m/other. These experiments grew from using water in wellness and spiritual rituals, visiting sacred wells and waterfalls and bathing together as part of our routine to regulate our nervous systems. We channeled shared learning about geology, heat and volcanoes and the history of our planet's landscape and related mythology. While navigating our shared hereditary immune disorder, working together has allowed us to explore what we can create and imagine within our capacities and magical crip-time bedspace and process how we feel about it.
Created in collaboration with Cyd Linton.
