Adrian Moakes
A striking public sculpture for the regenerated Market Place in South Normanton. Adrian’s ancestors hail from the town and his Father was born and raised there. After being interviewed and selected for the commission, Adrian informed the organisers of this family link and that his Grandfather ran a hardware shop in the 1930’s - right opposite the site of the artwork.
The design was developed in consultation with local residents and shopkeepers through exhibitions, school workshops and public drop-in sessions, plus a series of meetings with The Town Partnership, District Council and Derbyshire County Council.
When Adrian revealed that his Grandfather also renovated old clocks and antique furniture, there was a unanimous vote to base the work on a grandfather clock. Intended to form a conceptual link between local coal mining and generations passing through the strata of time, the sculpture has become a popular and symbolic landmark in the centre of the town.
