Trust

By  Maria Kuipers 2012 - 2016
'Trust' is one of those paintings which has come on a long journey. As I work on self-development my art follows, or, the other way around, when my art speaks to me about my psychological, spiritual or some aspect of the human condition it influences my development. I had to trust the process and let go of preciousness for the painting to emerge. It is now settled. I love to use discarded recycled materials and here I've used found pieces of 'Broderie Anglaise' fabric. Each material becomes part of the structure and part of the construction of a painting. When I paint over fabrics, whether thinly or opaquely, I feel a sensuous and fragile quality that connects with the human condition.

Bcalm has a history of transition starting from 2013 when I exhibited this painting in a solo show in London, Thomas and Paul Gallery. Returning after the show I modified the painting by simplifying the complex array of shapes and making subtle changes to the colour values. Then in early 2015, post West Pier Art project, I changed it again. Materials and techniques used within a layering process, were painting, incising, scraping, sanding sgraffito, fabric and paper collage, tapestry, and…
