Underneath the surface

By Maria Kuipers 2019
Underneath the surface was developed after 3 paintings underneath that I abandoned. I sanded back and repainted starting the whole canvas again each time so it has a history. Influences at the time can be attributed to John Hoylands paintings but worked instinctively making it my own. The rich, impasto and hard edged orange and turquoise colours contrasts with the scratched layers of flesh pink exposing pockets of colour underneath.

I revisited Big Blue many times to rebalance colour relationships and to create a fresher and more realised painting.
