Underworld

A site-responsive installation made during my residency at Gullkistan, Iceland. Dead branches were collected from the floor of the little forest and placed in between the floor boards. Some were whittled to fit, rather like sharpening pencils. These branches are naturally shaped like fingers, claws, bones and horns and have a slight curve to them. They call to mind skeletons, giant insects, creatures or monsters sliding, pouring, seeping through the floorboards and also link to magic and the metaphysical. They were like drawings of grass on the floor. This work also links to Icelanders belief that magic and hidden magical beings exist in the landscape.
