Undine

Rachel Johnston

This piece consists of three pairs of shoes: one pair worn almost to the point of destruction, one unworn and one that is barely there - a ghostly presence. The worn pair were used to make a series of journeys and a series of 20 photographs accompany the objects, pinpointing moments on this journey. Each walk ended in water; the stepping into water at the end of the journey suggests ritual cleansing and symbolises a state of liminality, an uncertain space and a point of transition at which the old self is left behind and a new identity assumed.
