Undressing in a Rainbow

Similar to its sister painting, the figure in this painting is derived from the same rapid sketch of a one minute pose at a life class. Crudely jotted down in oil pastel, focusing entirely on the flat shape of her and a basic rectangle representing the floor. After developing two collages from this and exploring giving her clothes in the collages, I began two paintings, made alongside one another. This one became the antidote to the calmer, subdued colour palette of its sister painting and I fully indulged the rainbow of colours that exploded within it. I toyed for some time about leaving her naked and in the end the vest became a way of connecting with her surroundings on the surface.
