Wild Fire

By  Arron Kuiper 2017
This body of work to do with ecology and climate change. Indeed the works themselves are like static micro systems, the oil paint suspended by a chemical relationship, never moving and acting in texture and colour. This most recent work attempts to explore and exploit the fact that inside the box is an environment ultimately definable. The use of forced perspective is key but so is a ground of smoke haze and sky employed almost like a traditional landscape painting. This however required the sacrifice of one viewing plane as it becomes 'the back', yet it remains of interest as a window into construction. The main subject of terra firma, flames and smoke project to occupy space like the ultimate impasto, the gel artificially coloured to heighten perspective. The Californian wildfires in 2017 are the main point of the piece especially given the denial of climate change phenomenon. Yet there is a beauty in the colour especially at night. A landscape of embers, masses of flame consuming a dark yet pristine mass and of course smoke a proved interesting challenges for the artist.
