Vacant Space: The Row, Coventry

In our latest film, we explore "The Row", a project that breathes new life into a former NHS building in Coventry, now serving as a vibrant hub for artistic expression and community engagement. This transformation is part of our Vacant Space initiative, a programme that repurposes unused commercial properties into centres of creative activity.

"The Row" became a focal point for the Coventry Biennial 2019, hosting 'The Twin', an exhibition showcasing the innovative work of artists and the collaborative efforts of Coventry Artspace.

We speak with Mindy Chillery, Executive Director of Coventry Artspace; Ryan Hughes, Founder and Artistic Director of Coventry Biennial; and artists Adelaida Antúnez Egurbide and Alfie Gibbs (Mousethings), who received the Axis commission to exhibit their work at the biennial. Their project, 'A Litany' (pt 1 & 2), exemplifies the dynamic and transformative potential of vacant spaces when infused with contemporary art and community spirit.

This film highlights the successful collaboration between Axis, artists, and local organisations and celebrates the impact of the Vacant Space programme in fostering accessible and engaging contemporary visual arts. Through initiatives like these, Axis continues to champion the importance of art in revitalising communities and bringing people together.

Discover more about the transformative power of art and space in our film documenting "The Row" and the Coventry Biennial 2019, a testament to the creativity and resilience of the contemporary visual arts community.
