Supporting artists to grow, connect and be seen
Artist centred development opportunity for early to mid career artists.
Fellowship
The Axis Fellowship is a fully funded, artist centred development opportunity for early to mid career artists. It nurtures growth, connection and visibility through mentoring, profile raising and financial support.
“The Axis Fellowship has been a much needed space to reflect on my practice and plan for the future.”
Uma Breakdown, 2024 Axis Fellow
This is about being part of a community that believes in what you do and helps you keep going.
What is the Axis Fellowship
Each year, we invite applications for three places on the Axis Fellowship. Selected artists receive:
- £4,000 in development funding
- One to one mentoring and monthly cohort sessions
- Bespoke digital content support
- Profile raising opportunities through Axis
We work closely with each Fellow to tailor support around their needs so they can grow their practice and reach new audiences.
Why the Axis Fellowship
We know how hard it is to sustain a career in the arts, especially at times of transition or uncertainty. The Axis Fellowship is our way of investing directly in artists.
We are an independent charity. The programme is fully funded by Axis and reflects our long term commitment to supporting artists.
Who is it for
The Axis Fellowship supports early to mid career artists who:
- want time and space to focus on their work
- value being part of a cohort
- are open to mentoring, learning and visibility
- want to share their journey with others
To apply, you must be an Axis Member and part of our online Community. Two places are reserved for Professional Members with at least twelve months of membership. One place is open to all other Members through a Fellowship Top Up.
- Join Axis to be eligible for the next round.
When can you apply
Applications for the Axis Fellowship 2025 are now closed and the selected artists have been announced.
Applications for the 2026 Fellowship will open in spring. You must be an Axis Member to apply.
Current Axis Fellows
Meet the 2025 Fellows, Anna F Hughes, Dorothy Hunter and n:u (melissandre varin). They will work with Axis from autumn into spring through mentoring, cohort sessions and new work development.
What Fellows say
“The sessions helped me open new perspectives in my practice.”
Asuf Ishaq, 2024 Axis Fellow
“The reflections are still with me in the studio. The connections grow and the conversations continue to have an effect.”
Hannah Leighton Boyce, 2024 Axis Fellow
“It brought me into the orbit of interesting and challenging practitioners who shared their processes and offered thoughtful feedback.”
Sean Roy Parker, 2024 Axis Fellow
These experiences shape the Fellowship each year and continue beyond the funded period.
During the Fellowship
Fellows work alongside each other across two three month blocks.
Typical activity includes:
- monthly cohort meetings to share work in progress and exchange ideas
- one to one mentoring with artists, curators and producers
- leading a session that introduces their influences and ways of working
- developing new work to share through Axis content
- taking part in mentoring for other artists through our Critical Friends offer
Each year is shaped by the Fellows themselves, but the focus stays on time, care and creative exchange.
How it works
The Axis Fellowship runs in two seasons, October to December and February to April.
- Fellows meet monthly as a group and in one to one mentoring
- Each artist creates content to share their work and reflections
- New work is promoted through our platform and social channels
Legacy and impact
We archive each Fellowship year so that each cohort and their contributions have a place in our long term record.
