Christopher Hall

Leeds
Christopher Hall is a visual artist and film archivist specialising in painting, print and audio-visual work.

Christopher Hall is a painter, film-maker, archivist, researcher and gardener.

His practice is interdisciplinary with a strong emphasis on collaboration and process. He was the winner of the Swinton Foundation Prize at New Lights 2013. Born near Birmingham, he lives and works in Leeds.

He takes a methodical and a collage-like approach to his work; utilising a range of media to explore and present his ideas. His approach, coupled with a strong desire to experiment and let chance play its part, means that his output is not easily defined or compartmentalised. Rather it can be seen to ‘hang together’ and the results have a consistency and coherence of their own.

His paintings are strewn with half-buried fragments, scrubbed out lines, appropriated material and allegorical references; the discipline and craft of oil painting finely balanced with a compulsion to experiment. The ‘failings’ and idiosyncrasies of his method are singularly embraced, encouraged even; they are allowed to change the course of the work and take it in new and unexpected directions.
