ADAM KALINOWSKI

POZNAN, PL
I have studied Cultural Anthropology at State University in Poznan, Poland. M.A. in 1987. Working professionally as an artist for over 35 years.

I work parallel on different ideas at time but for the last 15 years my art interest is focused mainly on participatory works which I believe are very important for the public art domain. My initial artistic attitude as always was is to change social-aesthetic notion of reality by my art projects. My realizations like “RAINBOW PARK” (2012) or “THE PRACTICE OF FREEDOM I” and “THE PRACTICE OF FREEDOM II”  both (2013), THE DREAM CITY(2015), PITCH OF COLORED SAND(2019) are based on participatory perception of art installation which is physically changed in time by viewers walking on it barefoot mostly or working with its elements somehow with the intention in mind or not. The perception of these works is a fusion of physical – tactile, visual and iconological meanings of its elements. The entropy process starts at the very beginning when participants approach the project which is getting deeper and deeper so work never comes back to the starting point.

I used to work with wide range of materials in my artistic career; from different kind of wood and board, Styrofoam, gas, balloons, steel, plastic, recycled materials, colored aggregates, electric motors etc. so have experience how to work with them. I have always been interested in the concept of living sculpture; at first, they were objects powered by mini electric motors with geared motors which changed the position of elements of the object in very slow cycles; later, they were projects for the open space using wind turbines or the wind as the driving force, creating the type of the "one-day sculpture". Now, the living sculpture is an idea of the form consisting in using structural elements which can include also intervention into the surface of the earth by using vegetating plants which joined into one object placed in the public sphere, require the simple care that can include participation of volunteers. It can produce the type of the public ritual and thereby the feeling of empathy and a sense of responsibility for a symbol which is simultaneously like a living organism; it requires care and a little attention so that it does not perish and will not become the symbol of desolation and fall.

I want  to continue working on the concept of the show where colored aggregate is used, but produced inside gallery, which will be more conceptual as opposed to outdoor works, where the starting point is a painting study on canvas, where one can use a very subtle color palette and then refer to these paintings when creating compositions using colored aggregate. The process was present in the “XYZ2” show which took place in 2022 in the gallery in Poznan, Poland.  I do also patent applications and I'm patent holder concerning green infrastructure which delivers climate comfort for users.
