Alice Briggs

Alice Briggs is an artist, arts educator and curator who has exhibited and invigilated work in the UK and mainland Europe. 

Alice is focused on learning, sharing and belonging; often using creative workshops and walking to study place, whilst studying local heritage, ecologies and land use. She creates work with different materials, often found in the landscape around her. She is drawn to study aspects of family history, using objects and costume belonging to her grandmother to create performance and to transform everyday familial items. The space between the above and below, the edges of land, our thoughts, languages and the in between of living in a landscape rooted in Welsh culture all hold a fascination. Her role as a mother and a daughter seep into her work through fairytales, folk tales and the importance of care.

Alice Briggs graduated in Visual Performance at Dartington College of Arts, and completed an MA in Art Museum and Gallery Studies from Newcastle. She founded Blaengar - an emerging arts organisation focused on site-specific works and creative events in the public realm. Alice is part of an all women's collective Ymylon, providing co-created, participatory arts projects which foster deepr understanding, compassion, connection and community through culture and nature to create arts education and development opportunities for the benefit of artists and creative practitioners and community in Mid Wales. 

Alice interests are in co-design, community engagement, arts, wellbeing, social change and representation.  She has experience of working within a variety of health care environments, including dementia sufferers, mental health, stroke rehabilitation and with children suffering long-term illnesses and learning difficulties. 

Alice is first generation Welsh and was brought up on a sheep farm on the uplands of the Cambrian Mountains. is Programme Manager for Tir Canol, a landscape partnership in Mid Wales.  Previously roles include grant manager for Powys Council Arts and culture department, Head of Art at Amgueddfa Cymru, and was previously assistant curator at Ceredigion Museum based in Aberystwyth from 2009-22. Alice has experience in the commissioning and management of public art projects in her previous roles as Project Manager for Cywaith Cymru (subsequently Safle); the public art agency for Wales, arts tutor for Aberystwyth University's School of Lifelong Learning, and gallery interpreter for Aberystwyth Arts Centre. Other positions have included arts facilitator for Haul Arts in Health.
