Artist statement I have a deep attachment to the island on which I live, which has informed my work during the development of identifying my relationship between self and place. This attachment was created by spending time alone outside immersing myself in the landscape, really observing and recording what I see, hear, feel, smell and touch as well as researching current topics and stories from the past. I am a multi disciplinary artist. My current work consists of abstract oil paintings produced in the studio from observational drawings made in the landscape, research, and investigation. The paintings capture the feelings of a place, along with the smells, tastes, textures and colours. There is a sense of movement, and solid light. In the past, I have made performances in the landscape, and have encouraged other people of all ages to join me. I aim to be an inspiration to others, and plan to run workshops worldwide. My first residency at Taigh Chearsabhagh Arts centre in Lochmaddy, North Uist: 'Secret Sea' ran from October 2011 to march 2012, with the Exhibition running from march to May 2012. During the residency, sea journeys were taken to locations on the coastline of North Uist that were once occupied by people and most easily accessed by boat but now abandoned and gradually being reclaimed by nature. The group exhibition took place in March 2012, my work consisted of six large photographic prints of Lichen, items collected on the journey which had been turned into solid silver. And filmed performances, made in collaboration with another artist. The filmed performances 'stag in the sea'. and 'deer in Grimsay' will be in the 'Northern lights are us' film.
