Geraldine Hudson
My practice is intrinsically bound to my own ancestral/societal history and experience of inhabiting an emotionally sensitive neurodiverse body, and in turn the ethics present in relation with the other than human. Positioning art as a means to address the damage inflicted on our other kin and shared ecologies.
Learning from my own experiences within magickal and intentional communities I integrate these methodologies into a material art practice, as contemporary conduit to encourage and facilitate understanding between us and the other worlds, allowing space to reconsider social/biological hierarchies and consensus realities.
I enact rites, folk customs and pilgrimages which feed back into an exhibited practice where narrative, artefact and event serve as devices with which to deconstruct and re-view certain cultural histories, especially of those outcast and othered due to harmful systemic frameworks. The art making is often collaborative, whether with other biological kin or humans, both living and deceased. Wandering between participatory events and clay meditations to my own studio practice.
The materials I work with, being both transient and permanent, often site/time dependent such as earth/clay, ash, human hair and plant matter hold within them various signifiers and cultural meaning. utilising materials of significance within folk magic as a way marker to other worlds, worlds within worlds.
