Jo Ray

Sheffield
Jo Ray is an artist, researcher and lecturer based in Sheffield, UK.

Jo Ray is based in Sheffield, UK. Her practices explore the interplay between imagined possibilities and lived experience, typically through lens based works, performance and installations responding to social and spatial situations, found imagery, text and archive material.

Projects are often site responsive, exploring encounters with the architectures we live in and through. Exploring the material, relational, and spatial attributes that shape our experiences.

Lived Experience

I'm a neurodivergent artist balancing art practice and projects with teaching and scholarship.

In all these settings, my way of working aims to create the conditions for curiosity, dialogue, and new insight -  whatever the scale or scope.

I've been practicing since the late 90s/ early 2000s, when I was able to attend art school through to postgraduate thanks to access to grants and scholarships.

I have lived somewhat precariously, making art and design works in relation to places and communities, in particular in the North East and North West, spending time living in Newcastle, Co.Durham, and West Cumbria, and working as a fractional lecturer in Fine Art.

In 2014 I was awarded a scholarship to do a PhD in Fine Art practice at Sheffield Hallam, which has led to working in art as research contexts, I now also lecture in Design disciplines which has brought new perspectives and contexts for my methods.
