Julie Parker

Basingstoke
Visual artist primarily using collected human hair and dryer lint to make sculpture and installation.

My work is led by the materials and marks that I am attracted to and their inherent meanings. I currently use mainly dust, tumble dryer lint, and hair because of their close contact with humans. I explore through drawing, painting, video, sculpture and installation.

A surreal aesthetic often emerges during the making process. I am interested in Kristeva's theories on the fear of the abject and there is often a tension between the fragility of the work and the repellant nature of materials normally cleared from our spaces and discarded.

Starting points vary, and can be anything from myths and fairy tales to museum artefacts, or even exhibition titles.  I enjoy researching topics alongside making in the studio.
