Stuart Dodman

Brighton
Making paintings, drawings, objects and sound.

I graduated from Sheffield Hallam University with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art (painting and printmaking) in 1995. After which I started to make installation and sound work culminating in CD releases for Seattle based label and/OAR (2004) and Spanish label Con-V (2005). These works were about the space I was in, site-specific, time-specific as well as being about trying to make things within a structured environment.

After making sound art and object based installations in the 00’s, I started to make drawing and painting the main focus of my practice. My work centres around the act of creating, foundation and fundamentals. I work in series and strands which allow me to make things to overcome the constant nagging doubt of  image making. My paintings are either unplanned, organic drawings into paint, accumulation of material or retracing previous actions.  My objects are either by-product of painting activity or based on my fascination of frames and supports. The permeance of the mark, the build up of pictorial relationships and the underlying foundational support of making are things I keep coming back to.  I currently live and work in Brighton on the south coast of the UK.
