Stuart Dodman

Stuart Dodman is a British artist based in Brighton working across painting, drawing, objects and sound. His practice is concerned with making and material.

Working in series, Dodman makes paintings through repeated acts of covering, applying and excavating paint. Each stage affects what follows, altering the material conditions of the painting's development. Earlier states remain consequential even when they are no longer visible, their effects carried into the surface as it develops.

His objects take up the conditions of making from different directions, bringing together the residue of painting and the supports on which it depends. They draw attention to elements that usually remain secondary to the finished image, considering their place in the making of the work itself.

Dodman graduated from Sheffield Hallam University in 1995 with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art, Painting and Printmaking. His early practice included site-specific installation and sound works, with releases on the Seattle-based label and/OAR and the Spanish label Con-V. Sound remains part of a wider practice concerned with making, material and the conditions in which work manifests.
