Architectural Apparatus No.5 Rev.1 [Inverted Triumphal Arch]

By  Douglas Clark 2012

Dimensions
3 metres x 1.5 metres x 4 metres

This work looks at the monument but at the same time examines our attitude to the ‘industrial’. Triumphal arches are, classic monumental forms – gates without walls glorifying leaders or battles or nations. This architectural form is taken and subverted by inverting it as if it has been cast down and swallowed by the earth, the diagonals on the vertical legs of the piece implying fracture and the streaked rusted steel signifying an industrial decay. By taking this monumental form the work retains the vestiges of a monument yet manipulating it in such a way as it is no longer a glorification but more of a lamentation, it becomes a reflection of our broken and lost industrial bedrock.
