Bloom

This is a site-responsive installation made during my residency at Gullkistan, Laugarvatn, Iceland. Coloured flag tapes are attached to the sloping ceiling. Rubbing the tape creates static that opens the tapes like umbrellas, parachutes, rockets, fireworks, flowers. The work appears both light and full and viewers moving around the forms attract the tape so that it moves towards people or clings to them. Icelanders use the readily available thermal energy and make cheap efficient energy so the studio was always very warm. This atmosphere helps create and sustain the static and also reflects the economical production of power, in this case the human hand or human touch.
