Blue Window 2

By Jenny Mellings 2020
The second of two 'window' works as part of a new series of cyanotypes that are being made under the restrictions of spring/summer 2020. From a position of isolation I reflect on absent friends and family, and the distant connections we still make via the internet and telephones. Looking more closely at the immediate environment, such as through the circle of a microscope lens, led to the circular format and recurrent theme of the bubble with all it's metaphorical resonances. Some of the cyanotypes remain as they are when printed, whereas others are being painted into with watercolour and pigment such as Lapis lazuli and Egyptian Blue.

This is a painting of two layers relating to the experience and limitations of communication via Skype. The shadowy 'figure' is trapped behind a screen, obscured by the pointillist/divisionist dots of light. The colours suggest a nocturnal view, dominated by orange, which reflects of the ubiquitous colouring of the sodium vapour streetlamp.
