Clytemnestra Three

A continuation in the Clytemnestra series, featuring the motif of a double headed axe*. Essentially scruffy, the mise en abyme reference to painting of painting itself is suggested by fragments of frescos found in the archaeological museum of Mycenae, the supposed seat of Agamemnon and Clytemnestra. Referring to Greek tragedy** the painting explores the catharsis of revenge and retribution within the fantasy of myth. Red, again, suggests both blood and fury.
* The double headed axe could be either functional or symbolic, in Clytemnestra’s hands probably both.
**The reference is to Clytemnestra in “Agamemnon” by Aeschylus.
Oil and Acrylic on Deep Canvas.
