Dear Passenger
A multi-media installation in several parts
Drawing/text Size: 6m. x 12cms.
Sound - 3 speakers
Bass Track and other mobile phone films of border crossings
The drawing/text begins on the 5.42am train and continues throughout the day to Osnabrück through drawing and sound recordings that range from station chatter to border crossings. A stream of text, exactly fitting the length of the drawing, following the non-linear line of thoughts that occurred throughout the journey was added the next day. The drawings are made in real time and are generally unfinished, often jerky, whilst the text spans the personal, the observational and the opinionated and continues to the exact length of the drawings.
Throughout the journey, I made recordings of what I think are significant events. The departure lounge where people of all nationalities wait, sit, talk, often together mixing languages and cultures; crossing borders that aligns with my long-term research even if, sometimes, I may miss the actual unmarked crossing and follow it on my phone receiving a data text message afterwards. These are both filmed, shown in the series Bass Trackand sound recorded. Using three speakers together to make a triple point arrangement, train engine noise underpins the whole thing with passenger chat bubbling over it. Cutting through this, the third point is a repetitive and almost rhythmical composition of announcements made in several languages.
