Drawing Beyond Looking
Beyond Looking is part of my new drawing series which I brought to to the Rise School in Feltham through inclusive, sensory-driven workshops for Year 8 autistic learners.
The sessions encouraged students to close their eyes and work together to create intuitive, automatic marks with handmade drawing tools. Contrasting their free mark making they worked with templates to create layers of geometric forms on top of their drawings in two colour palettes. These were then cut into four ‘tiles’ and combined with other drawings offering further opportunities for collaboration and rearrangement forming new lines, shapes and spatial relationships. These works are new compositions developed from the workshops fragmented drawings.
The new drawing series asks how we might redefine creativity if we let go of the need to ‘see’ or represent in the traditional sense and understood drawing as an intuitive act.
