Empirical Cracks in the Pavement, 1645-1883

Kate Gadsby (Art Textiles 2)

I walked with my children along the same routes to and from school for eight years. Manhole covers, cracks in the pavement, petals, leaves and other materials I came across on these and other walks inspired me to create a body of work called the Pavement Works Collection. Started in 1998, to date the collection consists of over twenty works in eight categories. Empirical Cracks in the Pavement, 1645-1883 is part of the Cracks and Gaps category. The information card reveals that Empirical Cracks in the. Pavement, 1645-1883 is a collection of facsimiles of cracks discovered in the following Worthing pavements: Shaftesbury Avenue, Melbourne Road, Walpole Avenue, Elgin Road, Clive Avenue, Wellesley Avenue and Marlborough Road. There follows a list of the materials used: twisted paper, flax formed into paper, hand made box, silk & cotton woven straps, road names and coat of arms of Great Britain. twisted paper, flax (formed into paper) handmade box, hand woven silk/cotton straps, road names, coat of arms (GB)
