Erased, Redrawn: Mary Beale

By  Vicki Cooke 2012

Kevin Thomas

Mary Beale (1632-1699) is described as the first professional British female painter. She is best known for her portraits and made her living taking commissions from patrons. !n 1664 she wrote an 'Essay on Friendship' proposing the radical notion (for the time) of equality between the sexes, both in friendship and in marriage. Her philosophy was put into practice when, upon her return to London, she established her as a professional artist. Her husband became her assistant, organising commissions, doing the accounts and mixing the paint. Prints are available to buy

Many women were making art in the 17th and 18th century, but much of their work has disappeared without a trace. How do we choose to remember the past when what we see is always incomplete? The ghosts of the forgotten are haunting, but through the action of drawing, they are remembered. Featuring in the series 'A Woman of Genius', rediscovering the lives of women artists. Fratellini ran a successful studio in Florence in the Baroque period and painted portraits and religious scenes.
