Furies Five

By  Susan Banks 2022 - 2024

Dimensions
60 x 80 x 2

In ancient Greece, the Furies were infernal deities, goddesses of vengeance and retribution, known for tormenting and punishing those who commit crimes and offend the gods. Featured in myth and tragedy and central to this painting, they spin around in a setting reminiscent of Greek vases. Unlike the preceding paintings in the series, in Furies Five the colours are mostly variations of grey creating a more sombre mood while keeping some of the energy of the earlier form. The aim of tragedy, according to Aristotle, is to bring about catharsis in the spectators — to arouse in them sensations of pity and fear, and to purge them of these emotions. In the aftermath of harm, these female spirits, rather than seen as grotesques can represent justice and positive energy.. Oil and acrylic paint on canvas. Now on improved, slightly wider stretchers.
