Ghost in the Machine | An ongoing series of handmade jewellery and images of my own body.
Drawing on Gilbert Ryle’s theory of the ‘ghost in the machine,’ which critiques the separation of mind and body, this project is an investigation into emotion, embodiment, consciousness, movement and repetition through jewellery and the photocopier.
Ryle argued that consciousness is tied to the body’s actions, something I explore through the physicality of my hands (for me, the site of the physical symptoms of anxiety) and how they are involved in both creating and documenting these experiences.
The rings captured here are made by heating recycled silver until it becomes molten, allowing me to partially guide its flow into uncanny and organic forms. The processes of jewellery making and photocopying my body mirror each other: as I move and guide, the glitches and distortions in the prints reflect the same unpredictability of the molten metal.
