Working in partnership with Birtley Ibstock Brick Works, Hadrian artwork has been designed using traditional brick making skills and made using the basic principles employed in relief printing. Carving into the brick clay, the process reflects the Roman tradition of 'dressing bricks', evidence of which still exists intermittently along Hadrian's Wall spanning Newcastle to Carlisle. The raised surface of the clay has been 'stained' with clay colours before firing in a kiln the size of two factories. The assembled bricks form a tactile and colourful 'wall'.
