Graphite pencil on sculpted paper-clay, 2020.
Made during the first UK lockdown this drawing is an attempt to represent energy and the transformative process of change. The entire surface of the hand, front and back, is covered in drawing that emanates from the palm. It is a manifestation of agency and agentive sculpture. It was inspired by an essay by Dr Elizabeth Frood called Statues in Context, Production and Meaning. This electrifying essay describes examples of Ancient Egyptian statuary in terms of their capacity for agency both together with and apart from the identity of the person they represent.
