Hazel Shard.

By  Tim Pugh 2022
A warm November meant that Autumn lingered on deep into winter and gave me the opportunity to create a series of temporary environmental leaf artworks from Hazel trees seemingly reluctant to shed their leaves. This particular interaction was created at the Hawarden Woods estate in Flintshire,North Wales,in December 2021.I located a silver birch tree that had a large vertical hollow running up its side and filled the gap with twigs, threaded with Hazel leaves. The twigs were wedged inside the hollow and with the compressed leaves, created a striking yellow textural sliver or shard that stood out strongly in the wood. The availability of very large leaves gave me the ability to change and transform the presence of the trees and the prolonged settled weather in the run up to Christmas afforded me lots of time to experiment.
