The temporary installation was created from beach plastic harvested from West Cumbrian beaches in June 2021.I sketched out an outline of a toy soldier onto a boulder at South Beach, in Whitehaven and filled in the form with the beach plastic, rather like a jigsaw. The artwork highlights the dangers of plastic to marine ecosystems and evokes my own past boyhood passion with collecting toy soldiers. The soldier I found on the beach was in a melancholy sea worn state and caused me to dwell on its origins and reflect on where and how it ended up in the sea and its subsequent lonely ocean voyage.
